Subliminal stimuli bypass conscious perception by stimulating and arousing senses that appeal to the thalamus. It is the goal of subliminal messages to pass through one’s distractions unnoticed. People focus their conscious perception on other things when faced with redundant information they deem unimportant. The thalamus, which is the brain’s main attention center, is where sensory gating occurs. Alternatively, sensory gating is another barrier that subliminal messages must remain under. This indicates that the message has undergone subliminal processing.Įvery subliminal message aims to achieve this. This provides the individual with new information about the world that will help them make informed decisions in the future. Our unconscious brain processes and registers stimuli that occur below our conscious level of awareness. This is because the stimulus is objectively detectable for every individual. Within the objective threshold, however, is a stimulus perceived as remaining above the level of conscious awareness. Individuals’ subjective realities differ. Subjective thresholds define the level of consciousness below which one is aware of a stimulus. Oftentimes, people focus on one specific thing in the world, excluding all else from their attention. In order to be a subliminal message, the stimuli must remain below one’s level of conscious awareness and perception. One constantly inspects the world with their senses subliminally, unaware of many things, including the breath, most of the time.
